Deep Thoughts: A Push From God

Editor's Note: This devotion will appear in the 2010 Lenten devotional book that my church compiled.

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breaker have swept over me.
By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is
with me — a prayer to the God of my life. Psalm 42:7-9

A few days ago, I discovered a new “app” for my phone – Words With Friends - which is a Scrabble-like game.

One of the games’ features is that each time one of my opponents makes a move; I receive a “push” notice on my phone. The best way to explain this is that my phone “dings” and sends me a text notice to say “It’s your move.”

Often, if I have a couple of free minutes, I’ll stop and make the next play. Other times, I ignore the message until life is, well, a bit more convenient.

Sometimes, I think God sends us his own “push” notices to pray for someone. While they may not be as obvious as the message on my phone, they are there – waiting for us to notice.

I know in my own life God uses a variety of ways – sometimes a bit unusual at times – to “push” me to pray for other people.

Some days, I find myself praying for a friend because of something he or she types in their Facebook status or on their personal blog.

Other times, I wake up praying for a random person because they appeared in a dream. I often find myself getting into contact with the person, only to find out that they are in need of prayer or an extra dose of encouragement.

Through all of these methods, I’ve learned that I need to be open to God’s gentle “pushes” in my life and see it as a call to prayer. It may not be as obvious as the “push” my phone gives me, but it is just as real and just as important.

Prayer: God, thank you for your nudges and reminders to pray for people in my life. Help me to find the time to pray for the people in my life - friends, family and more.

Question for Today: How does God get your attention so you will pray for someone? Do you listen when God “pushes?” Who is God directing you to pray for or to encourage today?

  1. Hey,

    great to know there's another Christian on blogger. Seriously this is the first blog I have seen that actually opens up and testifies of God's love and ways. Not to mention even though this may seem like a random thought, a random thought can do alot damage with God behind it. See, if I start praying for my friends when I get a "nudge", its possible they might come closer to God, therefore since I got this idea from you, I pray and God works. Awesome cycle, God bless.
